Englannin tekstinymmärtäminen, kirjoittaminen ja suullinen taito (hum., käytt., valt.) (3 op)

– English Academic and Professional Skills: Reading, Writing and Discussion for Students of Arts, Behavioural and Social Sciences

Lähtötaso: Lukion kielen englannin pitkä oppimäärä/B2

The aim of the course is for students to activate and develop skills in the academic and professional English of their field and to gain confidence to communicate in situations relevant to their studies and professional life. The intention is that students improve their ability to

• understand general and academic spoken language, extract information and identify viewpoints
• discuss academic and general topics, presenting ideas and opinions
• read and understand academic texts and extract information
• write clear and structured academic texts using the vocabulary of their field
• communicate more fluently, clearly, spontaneously and accurately
• take responsibility for their own learning through active engagement and self-evaluation.

Depending on the particular needs of the group, the course will include

• using spoken and/or written material relating to relevant fields from a range of sources such as journals, (text) books, the Internet
• reading the material, applying appropriate strategies
• writing texts relevant to the students' academic and professional needs
• presenting and discussing topics related to the fields of study
• becoming familiar with strategies and tools for future language development.

A variety of evaluation methods will be used, including peer- and self-assessment, portfolios and the continuous evaluation of performance. There will be no final test. Students are expected to engage actively in the tasks and other work agreed upon at the beginning of and/or during the course.

Englannin keskustelu ja kirjoittaminen (hum.) (2 op)

– English Academic and Professional Skills: Discussion and Writing for Students of Arts

Lähtötaso: Lukion kielen pitkä oppimäärä/B2. Tekstinymmärtämistä sisältävää englannin kurssia suositellaan suoritettavaksi ennen tätä kurssia.

The aim of the course is for students to develop discussion and writing skills in the academic and professional English of their field and to gain confidence to use these skills. The intention is that students improve their ability to

• understand advanced general and academic discourse, extracting information and identifying viewpoints
• discuss and debate academic topics, presenting, explaining and illustrating ideas and opinions
• write well-structured academic texts using the vocabulary of their field
• communicate more fluently, clearly, spontaneously and accurately.

Depending on the particular needs of the group, the course will include

• preparing topics for discussion relevant to the fields of study
• presenting, discussing and debating topics related to the fields of study
• looking at the language and structure of academic writing
• writing texts relevant to the student's academic and professional needs
• becoming familiar with dictionaries, websites and other aids to learning.

A variety of evaluation methods will be used, including peer- and self-assessment, portfolios and the continuous evaluation of performance. There will be no final test. Students are expected to engage actively in the tasks and other work agreed upon at the beginning of and/or during the course.

Valmentava kurssi: Englannin tekstinymmärtäminen, kirjoittaminen ja suullinen taito (3 op)

Lähtötaso: A2 – B1

Kurssi on tarkoitettu niille, jotka haluavat lisää varmuutta ja rohkeutta englannin puhumiseen ja kirjoittamiseen sekä haluavat parantaa kuuntelu- ja tekstinymmärtämistaitojaan. Tavoitteena on, että kurssin jälkeen opiskelijoilla on valmiudet osallistua oman tiedekuntansa EAPS-kurssille (Englannin tekstinymmärtäminen, kirjoittaminen ja suullinen taito (3 op) - English Academic and Professional Skills: Reading, Writing and Discussion).

Kurssin osallistujista ja näiden tarpeista riippuen kurssilla keskitytään

• lukutekniikoihin
• kuuntelutekniikoihin
• keskusteluharjoituksiin
• lyhyehköjen tekstien kirjoittamiseen
• sanaston kartuttamisen keinoihin
• oman oppimisen ja taitojen arviointiin.
