Information about Open University
The University of Helsinki has arranged Open University studies since 1977.
The Open University offers courses in Finnish from nearly all of the faculties at the University of Helsinki. There are dozens of subjects available.
The University of Helsinki Open University instruction complies with the degree requirements of the University of Helsinki and is approved by its faculties and departments. The Open University offers study modules and individual courses, but cannot award degrees. Studies can, however, be incorporated into a university degree if the student is later admitted to pursue degree studies.
Studies are grouped into basic and intermediate studies. Most of the studies offered are basic studies (25 credits). The scope of studies is indicated in credits (cr). One credit requires approximately 27 hours of study (lectures, literature, assignments, etc.). Classes are mostly held in the evening and on weekends.
Teachers are always approved by the University of Helsinki and are professionals in their discipline. Many of them have comprehensive experience of teaching in both the University of Helsinki and the Open University.
The University of Helsinki Open University is an independent institute. The Open University offers studies both on its own and in cooperation with other adult education institutions. Students can also complete distance studies online.
There are no age limits or previous education requirements: the courses are open to everyone.
There are many reasons to pursue studies at the Open University. The Open University offers:
- the latest information for maintaining your professional skills
- a useful way to spend your gap year
- support for launching a new career
- the possibility to explore different disciplines
- the joy of learning.
